The Wader Bag Confessional: What Au Sable Regulars Carry That They Never Talk About

Every angler has two gear lists. The first one is tidy—rod, reel, box of flies, nippers. That's the list you post online. The second one lives at the bottom of a salt-stained wader bag, and nobody talks about it.

We talked a few Au Sable regulars into a full tailgate inventory, and the results were equal parts practical and hilarious. Here's what actually rides along between Grayling and the Flies-Only water.

The Contents Nobody Brags About

One guide we'll keep anonymous carries a 1987 nickel his grandfather gave him. It has fished every season since. Another keeps a gas-station granola bar from 2021—"for emergencies"—that has been an emergency zero times. A third pulls out a hotel sewing kit and swears it has fixed more waders than any repair product on the market.

But strip away the superstition and the clutter, and a pattern emerges. The veterans all carry the same core of unglamorous stuff:

The One Item Every Veteran Swears By

Ask ten regulars and you'll get ten answers—except you won't. Underneath the lucky charms, almost everyone named the same thing: a small, cheap, backup fly box with a dozen proven patterns that never leaves the bag. Not the box they fish. The box they forget about until the main one takes a swim in the Rifle or gets left on the tailgate at Stephan Bridge.

The veterans call it insurance. It costs twelve dollars and it has saved more trips than any rod upgrade ever will.

Build Your Own: The Au Sable River Bag Checklist

Want a pack that earns its keep? Start here:

  1. Wading boots with felt or sticky rubber, matched to the gravel you'll walk
  2. Neoprene or fingerless wool gloves, October through April
  3. Split shot, indicators, and a tippet spool tender
  4. Bug spray and sunscreen in the same pocket—Michigan summer means both, often the same day
  5. A buff or neck gaiter for the mayfly clouds
  6. Toilet paper in a waterproof bag. You know why.
  7. Twenty dollars in small bills for the bait shop you didn't plan to stop at
  8. The backup fly box. Always the backup fly box.

Stock Up Before the Season Does

Everything on that checklist lives on our shelves at the shop—hemostats, tippet in every size from 3X down to 7X, dry bags, and yes, a few lucky nickels' worth of flies. Swing by before your next float and we'll help you build a bag that's honest about what the river actually throws at you.

The granola bar, though. That one's on you.
