Walk into any fly shop and you'll find shelves lined with materials that promise to transform your tying. Synthetics engineered for perfect translucency. Premium capes sourced from heritage breeds. UV resins that cure to a finish so glossy they practically glow. The marketing is confident, the photography is gorgeous, and the price tags reflect both.
Then you get to the river, and the trout don't care about any of it.
Or do they? The honest answer is more complicated than either the synthetic enthusiasts or the natural-fiber purists want to admit. We spent time talking with several experienced fly tiers who fish the Au Sable seriously — people who've been matching hatches on this river for years and have the fly boxes to prove it — and what we found challenges some assumptions from both camps.
The River's Specific Demands
Before you can have an intelligent conversation about materials, you need to understand what the Au Sable actually asks of a fly. This river is cold, clear, and slow in its most productive stretches. Brown trout here get significant fishing pressure, particularly on the Holy Water and other well-known reaches. These fish have seen a lot of flies. They've rejected a lot of flies.
What they respond to is presentation first, profile second, and color a distant third. But materials absolutely influence all three of those things — just not always in the ways that marketing copy suggests.
Water temperature matters too. Michigan's Au Sable runs cold enough in spring and fall that some synthetic materials behave differently than they do in warmer tailwaters. Certain foam products get stiffer. Some dubbing materials clump differently when saturated in cold water over a long wade session. These are real-world variables that lab testing doesn't always capture.
What Local Tiers Are Actually Using
We asked several experienced Au Sable tiers a simple question: if you could only use one category of materials — natural or synthetic — which would you choose for Michigan trout?
The answers were almost unanimous, and almost nobody gave a clean answer.
"It's never that simple," said one tier who's been fishing the Au Sable for over twenty years and ties most of what he fishes. "I use CDC for emergers because nothing synthetic moves in the surface film the way natural CDC does. But for bodies on nymphs, I'll take a good synthetic dubbing over hare's ear almost any day now because I can control the taper so much better."
That split perspective came up repeatedly. Natural materials tend to dominate in applications where movement, translucency, and surface behavior matter most. Synthetic materials often win where consistency, durability, and precise construction are the priority.
The CDC Question
Cul de canard — CDC — is the one natural material that almost every serious Au Sable tier defends without reservation. The oil-laden fibers from a duck's preen gland trap air in a way that no synthetic has fully replicated, and on the Au Sable's slower pools where a dry fly needs to sit perfectly in the film without any added floatant, that matters enormously.
The problem with CDC is that it's easy to ruin. Treat it with floatant and you've killed what makes it special. Let a fish slime it up and it sinks. It requires a different kind of care than most synthetic alternatives, and for anglers who prefer low-maintenance flies, that's a real drawback.
Several tiers mentioned that they've experimented with synthetic CDC alternatives — there are a few decent ones on the market — and found them acceptable for faster water where the fly is riding a riffle rather than sitting in a pool. But for the technical dry fly fishing the Au Sable is known for? Most of them go back to the real thing.
Where Synthetics Actually Win
Here's where the natural-fiber loyalists might want to pay attention: in several key applications, modern synthetics genuinely outperform their natural counterparts, and experienced tiers know it.
Nymph bodies and dubbing. Synthetic dubbing blends have gotten remarkably good, and for subsurface patterns, the ability to control fiber length, taper, and the amount of sparkle in a body is a real advantage. Patterns like the Frenchie and various Euro nymph styles that have become popular on the Au Sable in recent years are almost entirely synthetic in their construction, and they catch fish.
Streamer materials. Modern synthetic fibers like EP Fibers, Craft Fur, and various flash materials move in the water in ways that bucktail simply can't replicate. For the big articulated streamers that chase fall brown trout, synthetic tails and bodies are often the better choice — they pulse and breathe at lower retrieve speeds, which matters when you're fishing cold water where fish are less likely to chase.
Wing cases and shellbacks. Thin skin, Scud Back, and similar synthetic sheet materials make cleaner, more durable wing cases than turkey tail or pheasant tail fibers in most applications. They hold up through dozens of fish without cracking or fraying. For production tying where you're going through a lot of patterns, that durability advantage adds up.
The Marketing Problem
Here's the part that nobody in the industry wants to talk about: a significant portion of the premium pricing on both natural and synthetic fly tying materials is marketing, not performance.
That heritage-breed dry fly cape at three times the price of a standard grade? It matters if you're tying size 20 midges. It matters a lot less if you're tying size 14 Cahills for the Au Sable's Hendrickson hatch. The difference between a good-quality standard cape and a premium genetic cape at that hook size is often invisible to the trout.
Similarly, some of the premium UV resins and high-end synthetic dubbing blends are genuinely excellent products — but they're solving problems that most Au Sable trout patterns don't actually have. Simpler materials, used well, catch fish. They always have.
The tiers who consistently produce effective Au Sable patterns tend to have a modest, focused materials collection rather than a vast one. They know what each material does, they buy quality where it genuinely matters, and they don't chase novelty for its own sake.
A Practical Framework for Your Fly Box
If you're tying for the Au Sable specifically, here's what experienced local tiers suggest:
- Use natural CDC for dry fly wings and emerger patterns. There's no synthetic substitute that performs as well in the film on slow, clear water.
- Use synthetic dubbing for nymph bodies where control and consistency matter more than movement.
- Use natural hackle for dry flies — good hackle is still the foundation of a properly floating dry.
- Use synthetic materials for streamers where movement, durability, and bulk are the priority.
- Don't pay premium prices for materials where the difference won't show up in your finished fly or on the water.
The best fly for the Au Sable isn't the one tied with the most expensive materials. It's the one tied with the right materials, in the right proportions, and fished with a good presentation. That's as true now as it was fifty years ago, and no amount of marketing is going to change it.
